Aircraft Repair and Overhaul Explained: Timelines, Costs & Compliance in the UAE

September 21, 2026
aircraft repair and overhaul

Key Takeaways

  • A repair restores a damaged or defective item using approved data. An overhaul is a defined process of disassembly, inspection, rework, and testing. They run on different clocks and different paperwork.
  • Engines took 50% of global MRO spend in 2024, components 18%, and airframe work 17%. Airframe work was 26% in 2019, so most repair and overhaul money now sits in engine and component shops.
  • Narrowbody engine turnaround is regularly 180 to 200 days or more, so parts and shop slots, not labor hours, usually set your return-to-service date.
  • In the UAE, most maintenance on UAE-registered aircraft must be done by a GCAA CAR-145 approved organisation, and a certificate of release to service must be issued before the aircraft flies again.

Fleet managers researching overhaul options soon notice that “repair” and “overhaul” get used as if they mean the same thing. They don’t. A repair fixes what’s wrong. An overhaul restores an item to a defined standard. Each has its own timeline, its own cost drivers, and its own paperwork under UAE rules.

This guide separates the two so you can scope a job, ask sharper questions of aircraft repair companies, and avoid surprises when findings appear mid-check.

What Is the Difference Between Aircraft Repair and Overhaul?

A repair returns a damaged or defective item to an airworthy condition using approved data. Typical triggers are corrosion, structural damage, or a defect found during inspection. An overhaul isn’t just a bigger repair. Under the FAA’s 14 CFR 43.2, an item can be described as overhauled only if it has been disassembled, cleaned, inspected, repaired as necessary, reassembled, and tested to approved standards and technical data. The UAE applies its own GCAA rules, but that definition shows what a genuine overhaul involves.

What Do Aircraft Repair and Overhaul Cost?

Most of the money sits in engines and components, not airframes. Of global MRO spend in 2024, engines accounted for 50%, components 18%, and airframe maintenance 17%, according to Oliver Wyman data reproduced in IATA’s FY2024 Maintenance Cost Data eXchange (MCX) report. Airframe work was 26% of spend in 2019.

Engines rose from 41 to 50 percent, components from 17 to 18 percent, and airframe maintenance fell from 26 to 17 percent. Bar lengths are proportional to the percentages. For scale, the same IATA report puts average maintenance cost for 28 airlines and 2,703 aircraft at $1,522 per flight hour and $5.05 million per aircraft in FY2024. Those are fleet-wide airline averages with no normalization, so treat them as context, not a quote for one job.

No credible public price list exists for individual repairs, because scope depends on what the inspection finds. Four things move the number most: findings that add scope, parts availability and price, labor rates, and aircraft type. Oliver Wyman’s April 2026 survey of more than 150 aviation professionals found material cost inflation outpacing expectations by 100 to 200 basis points per segment in 2025, and labor rate inflation running at 5.5 to 6.0%.

How Long Does Aircraft Repair and Overhaul Take?

It depends on what’s being restored, and parts availability often matters more than labor hours. The clearest data is for engines: the same Oliver Wyman survey reports narrowbody engine turnaround times regularly running 180 to 200 days or more, with over half of respondents expecting no improvement within three years.

Airframe work runs on a different clock. A base maintenance input takes an aircraft out of service for weeks, and corrosion or structural repair findings can push it past plan. Typical durations by check type are in our guide to how long each type of maintenance event takes. Two habits keep downtime predictable: agree a findings allowance before the aircraft is opened, and confirm parts lead times before you commit to dates.

What Does UAE Compliance Require?

Under GCAA CAR-145 (Issue 09), organisations maintaining aircraft type validated or registered in the UAE must be approved, except non-commercial aircraft below 5,700 kg. A locally based approval covers UAE-registered aircraft only, so check which registry a facility’s approval covers before you plan around it. Four requirements shape every repair:

  1. Approved data. Damage is assessed, and repairs are carried out, using the data specified in CAR-M.304 (CAR 145.48).
  2. Findings go to you first. New defects found during maintenance must be brought to the operator for agreement before they’re rectified (CAR 145.50).
  3. Release before flight. Authorised certifying staff issue a certificate of release to service at completion. Components maintained off the aircraft get an AW Form 1 (CAR 145.50).
  4. Records. You receive the release certificate plus any specific approved repair data used, and the organisation retains records for three years (CAR 145.55).
How a Repair Moves From Defect to Release Under GCAA CAR-145 Six steps in a snaking flow. Step 1, defect found. Step 2, damage assessed and approved data used (CAR 145.48). Step 3, new findings agreed with the operator before rectification (CAR 145.50). Step 4, repair done and signed off by authorised staff. Step 5, certificate of release to service issued before flight (CAR 145.50). Step 6, release certificate and approved repair data copy handed over with records retained (CAR 145.55). Before you commit, ask any provider for its approval number and scope, and confirm it covers your aircraft type. Our guide to choosing an aircraft MRO provider in the UAE lists the other questions worth asking.

Where Does Dolphin Air Fit in a Repair and Overhaul Plan?

Dolphin Air’s base maintenance service covers scheduled checks, structural inspection, corrosion treatment, component replacement, and rectification of findings on Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family aircraft at Sharjah International Airport. Repainting and storage can run at the same site, through aircraft refinishing and painting.

Engine, APU, and component overhaul aren’t part of that list. They’re specialist shop work, so plan them as a separate stream if your scope includes them. For a wider view of how these pieces fit together, see our overview of MRO in aviation in the UAE.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between aircraft repair and overhaul?

A repair restores a damaged or defective item to airworthy condition using approved data. An overhaul is a defined process in which an item is disassembled, cleaned, inspected, repaired as necessary, reassembled, and tested to approved standards.

How much does aircraft repair cost?

There’s no standard price. Cost depends on the aircraft type, what the inspection finds, parts availability, and labor rates. Ask for an estimate that includes a findings allowance and a clear process for approving added scope.

Do aircraft repair companies in the UAE need GCAA approval?

Organisations maintaining aircraft type validated or registered in the UAE must be approved under CAR-145, except non-commercial aircraft below 5,700 kg. Ask for the approval number and confirm its scope covers your aircraft type.

How long does an aircraft overhaul take?

It depends on the item. Narrowbody engine turnaround is regularly 180 to 200 days or more, according to Oliver Wyman’s April 2026 survey, while airframe base maintenance typically takes weeks.
